Aidan O’Brien trained Maybe to take down The Fugue in the Investec Oaks (Fillies) at Epsom
The Group 1 Investec Oaks (Fillies) will be raced at Epsom over a mile, four furlongs and ten yards on Friday, 1st June. The line-up of fourteen three-year-olds is flooded with the entries of the hall mark trainer, Aidan O’Brien. Besides his strongest contender, Maybe, he has saddled Betterbetterbetter, Devotion, Kissed, Twirl and Was.
The prize money for the winner is £207,842.
The trainer has won the Oaks thrice before but has failed to saddle a winner ever since 2006. Today his chances for notching the count to four have surged more than ever before.
The three-year-old Galileo filly ended third in the Group 1 Qipco 1000 Guineas Stakes (British Champions Series) on 6th May at Newmarket over a mile. The race was won by her stable mate, Homecoming Queen, even though Maybe was the 13/8 favourite of the race coupled with Joseph O’Brien.
This was the first loss for the three-year-old after stretching the winning streak to five that shot off with her career debut. She struck three graded races within her juvenile campaign, an accomplishment many stay deprived of even beyond that age.
Her career debut was in the Irish Stallion Farms European Breeders Fund 2YO Fillies Maiden on 11th May at Naas over six furlongs.
She set the 15/8 favourite of the race, Ahimsa, into the third slot.
Aidan O’Brien trained raced her first ever graded race on 14th July at Leopardstown in the Group 3 Silver Flash Stakes over seven furlongs. She was the 2/7 favourite winner of the race and clawed away the win by a mere neck’s difference. She was riding with the stable jockey, J. P. O’Brien.
Finishing the closest was La Collina while parking third was Gooseberry Fool.
The second most significant achievement of the Irish filly was the victory in the Group 2 Keeneland Debutante Stakes on 7th August at Curragh over seven furlongs.
She was entered as the favourite second time in a row and led the runner up, Yellow Rosebud, by two and a half lengths.
The only serious dent in her record is the very recent third place that she posted, even then the trainer has entrusted her with the Oaks today.
Her fiercest rival for the race is John Gosden trained, The Fugue, who is coming straight out of a win in the Tattersalls Musidora Stakes and that also by shoving the Aidan O’Brien’s entry, Twirl, into the second place.
