Aidan O’Brien’s 2-year-old Power, the favourite to sweep up the Keeneland Phoenix Stakes
Aidan O’Brien’s juvenile colt, Power, is the favourite to win the Group 1 Keeneland Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh race course on 7 August, 2011.
The race is run at a distance of six furlongs and trainer Aidan O’Brien has immensely dominated the sprint by winning it 11 times in the last 13 runnings.
The 2-year-old bay colt Power is sent off as the 7 to 4 favourite to win the race, more effectively because of his last race.
Power contested in the Group 2 Coventry Stakes on 14 June, 2011, at the Ascot over at a distance of six furlongs. The race reeled in 26 two-year-old colts and among those was the Aidan O’Brien trained Power under jockey Ryan Moore.
At a distance of six furlongs, Ryan Moore held up the colt surprisingly, but pushed along 2 furlongs out and headway 1 furlong out.
The pair ran up the field and edged to the lead with just 110 yards to go.
The pair barely made it to the finish just before Roman Soldier who got defeated by Power by a mere neck.
The Ascot race was the colt’s third race of the career, and with three of three, Power is looking good to extend the unbeaten run to four to four, come the Phoenix Stakes.
The 7 August Curragh dash has also reeled in a massive field of 14 two-year-olds. Among the 14 colts, Aidan O’Brien has five other colts apart from Power.
It seems as if, the 14th running of the race will also belong to the champion trainer Aidan O’Brien which would take up his wins to 12, if he wins on 7 August, 2011.
The next best colt among the entrants is the Richard Hannon trained Lilbourne Lad.
The 2-year-old is the son of Acclamation, who was a high class sprinter himself.
So far the Hannon colt has started 4 times, with 3 wins and 1 runner up finish. He recently landed the Railway Stakes in June.
Other notable favourites are Frederick Engels at 4, Aidan O’Brien Reply at 6, all the way down to La Collina at 33 to 1 bar.
