Aidan O’Brien’s record waiting for yet another Juddmonte Beresford Stakes success, this time through Battle Of Marengo
The 2012 Group 2 Juddmonte Beresford Stakes is presenting the twelfth chance to the hall mark trainer, Aidan O’Brien, to add the glory on his profile. In the line-up for five over the mile trip, two entries are from the eleven time winning stable, Battle Of Marengo and Kingston Jamaica. It is the fifth race on the eight-race card on Sunday, 30th September at Curragh.
From 1996 to 2001, Aidan O’Brien brought back the prize money to the stable through four different jockeys and six under charges. He then struck a hat-trick at bagging it from 2004 to 2006.
In 2009 St Nicholas Abbey won it with jockey, Johnny Murtagh, riding while the last year’s edition went to the same stable through David Livingston, who was guided over the mile by jockey, Seamie Heffernan.
The event has been sponsored by Juddmonte Farms since 1988, and the race got alleviated to the Group 2 level in 2003. 2012 saw the race getting added to the Breeders’ Cup Challenge, granting the winner an entry in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf.
The highly likely entry for bagging away the €61,750 prize money is the 4 to 7 shot, Battle Of Marengo. Galileo’s bay colt has been unbeaten in the two outings from the three career starts that he has made.
He broke through the maiden on 21st August, 2012 in the Irish Stallion Farms European Breeders Fund Maiden at Gowran Park over seven furlongs.
It was nothing less than a joyous success as the ride of the stable jockey, Joseph O’Brien, raced across the wire by the massive margin of eleven lengths. Finishing the race right behind was, Flameseeker.
The next winning stop for the Irish bay colt was in the Icon Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Trial Stakes (Listed Race) on 8th September, 2012 at Leopardstown over a mile.
In the field of six, Battle Of Marengo, landed the race with the final 1 ¾ lengths in his favour. Riding with the same jockey that the two-year-old broke his maiden with, the duo defeated Trading Leather.
He retains the jockey for the straight third race, and will take off from the second stall, while the stable mate, Kingston Jamaica, has drawn the third gate.
