Aiden McGeady backs Spartak Moscow to recover from Chelsea loss
Spartak Moscow winger Aiden McGeady has tipped his side to recover from their 4-1 loss to Chelsea and progress into the knockout stages of the UEFA Champions League.
The Russian side took on the English Premier League champions at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday, 3 November, with the hope of making up for their loss to the Blues at home two weeks previously.
However, goals by Didier Drogba and Nicolas Anelka as well as a double by defender Branislav Ivanovic condemned Spartak to defeat. Nikita Bazhenov was able to claim a consolation for the visiting team.
Despite the loss, Spartak have a strong chance of progressing to the next round. They are currently tied with French champions Olympique Marseille on six points with two games to play. Chelsea have already booked their place in the last 16 of the tournament.
Former Celtic man McGeady believes that his club has what it takes to make it through to the next round of the competition.
He told UEFA’s official website that: "We played pretty well in the first half. However, as soon as Chelsea scored the first goal in the second half, we just collapsed.
'We have spirit to recover from loss'
"I think we have the spirit to recover from this loss. We've got two massive games now. It was always going to be difficult to take anything from Chelsea.
"We're just hoping that Chelsea can beat Marseille and obviously that we can do the business against Zilina."
McGeady moved to the Russian outfit from Scottish Premier League giants Celtic over the summer and has already made an impact with the club. The Republic of Ireland international has contributed two goals and five assists in his nine games so far, including
an assist in the Champions League.
