If I use an ADIDAS gi for judo to train Aikido... do you think this 3 stripes in the shoulder are disrespectful? or not ok in someway?

  1. It wasn't until the early 1900s the gi becomes a big issue .I have pictures of early jujutsu and karate practioners working out in tee shirts and shorts  and the GI was unknown in OKINAWA until they introduced karate to JAPAN.

The hakama was normal everyday attire for japanese males of the SAMURAI class for 200 years so a cheaper version was probably used for practice .Who trains in their best clothes?

Wear what the dojo you are training in requires but if you can find any documentarys on AIKIDO you will see many of the lower ranks training in the usual gi without the hakama.Wearing the hakama is a sign your art descends from a SAMURAI tradition aikido kendo kyudo (archery)

jodo (48 to 52 inch staff)naginata do (halberd)iaido etc..It is rarely worn by jujutsu and karate practioners except those of very high rank (8th dan and up) as these arts were considered the commoners civilian self protection arts.

  2. every brand of gi's has some form of branding on the garments.  whether it's to the bottom of the jacket or on the shoulders.

the Gi's  adidas make are judo gi's but there is no real rule in aikido as to which kind of gi to wear you have a choice between the heavier judo gi's  and the lighter karate style gi's.

it's all down to what you prefer.

I personally have both kind the judo gi's are a little heavier and better for techniques that require grabbing the clothes.  But in summertime they are just too heavy to train in.  In that case I prefer a karate style gi

about the branding I've never known anybody taking offence to that.  I know a few people that have sewn badges on their jacket or embroidered it with their name or other symbols

I personally have aikido embroidered in kanji (japanese script) on the back of my hakama.

if it bothers you that much just get a thread cutter or a small scissor and remove them.

  3. It isn't an Aikido gi, so why would you think it is acceptable?

    E

  4. You should wear what everyone else there is wearing.

  5. The Keikogi and the Hakama are used in Aikido yo.  So why would it matter?  I think use of a Gi period in Aikido is disrepctful to the tradition of Aikido.  Even Gi's where traditional "jujitsu" is studied is very disrespectful to the traditions of such a art.  Thousands of Aikido and traditional jujitsu students have worn the keikogi and the hakama through generations upon generations and now all of a sudden "Commercial McDojo time"?  .... oh well to each his own I guess.

  6. If it's what you have, you'd probably be okay for your early training days (That is, while you decide if you're going to stay with it, get a feel for the class, etc.) Generally, the aikido gi is just plain white, and it's likely that before long you'll be asked to get one. Hakama are generally reserved solely for yudansha, so wearing hakama would probably be considered more rude (This of course may not be true of all schools).

If you're buying a gi solely for aikido, buy the appropriate thing. You don't want to be -that guy-: the one who goes to a school ready to do something different (and that's the impression I'd get).
