Hi, My AC unit which is an older, through-the-wall unit makes a squeaking/squealing noise when I turn it on which doesn't stop. It started when it was running. It also does it when I turn it to the fan only setting. Is it the fan belt? Or something more expensive?

  1. HVAC Tech.:  The fan motors have bushings in window (through the wall) units. there are oil holes in the frame of the motor. I would recommend you get a repairman to oil your motor and see if the unit needs cleaning. What condition is your filter in? Keep it clean!

  2. There is no belt in window or thru-wall units. Go and get yourself a new unit. They are very affordable and at 10 to 18 cents per kWh, you will be even in no time.

  3. No isn't the fan belt it's the bear rings in the engine of the fan not the compressor I think that's the name in English, but if not sure, find baleros it's the Spanish word for it They usually get dry some times all you have to do is re greasing them again

  4. through the wall units dont have fan belts, at least i've never seen one. my guess, the bearings in the motor are tirerd, you may be able to open the unit up and shoot some kroil , wd40 or what have you on it (where the shaft meets the motor casing), but if it's an old unit replacing it would eventually pay for it self, usually with in the first year. the new a/c's are more energy efficient, pay attention to the E.E.R. (energy efficiency ratio/rating)  or S.E.E.R (seasonal EER) when you buy , the higher the rating the more you will save, also the more you will pay. is it's something you going to run all the time ? if so it may make sense to go iwith the higher EER. also make sure and size it correctly, you need about 30 btu's for every square foot.

    hope that helps

    cheers
