Air Conditioner?

SO i moved into this new place and my roommate put in the air conditioner a few weeks ago that came with the apartment. He had said it wasn't cooling well, so I checked the filter and it was filthy. I took the filter out, cleaned it and some ice starting to build up behind the filter. i have let the ice melt a few times, but it keeps building up and it is still not cooling well. Is there anything i can do to fix it?

If this is a window unit, pull it out and remove the top cover over the coils. Cover the fan motor with a plastic bag to keep it dry. If you can get some Kal Clean, or coil cleaner or ever a good degreaser, soak the coils well and let it sit 10 to 20 minutes. Use a water hose and rinse the coils out. Be careful not to bend the aluminum fins. Keep cleaning until water goes all the way through the coils.

Stand the unit on end and drain all water then when all is clean, replace all covers and slide back in the window.

Be sure to clean the squirrel cage fan as well as you can. (this will be behind the front coil)

A dirty coil can result in as much as 75% loss in cooling. If this doesn't correct the problem, and the fan blows real hard there may be a leak in the system.

the evaporator coil could be dirty to you will need a strong chemical to clean this you can find it at an AC wholesale house and dont need to have a license to get it do a 50-50 mix and spray it on the coil, the inside and outside coils. If this doesnt work then you have a refrigerant charge problem.
