Question:

Air Conditioning Condensation Problem?

by  |  earlier

We just moved into a townhouse with central air. The air conditioning unit has a pipe that drains the condensation in our washer/dryer room. However, the pipe is over a foot away from the drain and just drains directly onto the concrete floor. Is this going to mold? Is it safe?

  1. If you have a slop sink I would drain it there if not bring the pipe closer to the floor drain and one other thing the condensate line must have a trap on it to keep from pulling air up the pipe.

  2. Bugear is right. It will only cost you a few dollars to extend it to the drain. It's not hard at all and only takes a couple of minutes of time.Good luck.

  3. The water is safe, it came out of the air you breath in your townhouse. If the pipe is plastic, you can go to most any hardware and add whatever distance to the pipe you need. You may have to purchase 10 feet, but its cheap. I would cut a small piece off the end, take it with you to the hardware. You will need a coupling, glue, and the pipe. Its not pressurized pipe so you don't have to be perfect with your connection. Good luck.

  4. Hopefully the pipe is PVC. If so, extending it to the drain should be no problem. Check with Home Depot or any of the home supply stores for the necessary materials. Shouldn't cost over $5-$10.

  5. Yes, any wetness will tend to mold. I would suggest adding an extension to direct the condensate into the drain rather than the concrete.
