Question:

Air Eliminator?

I have an open vent central heating system. All in good order with regular boiler servicing. All relevant pipework is reasonably accessible. I am fed up with routine bleeding of the system via the vent on the boiler circuit in the airing cupboard and can always hear a swirl when the system starts up in the morning, although the build up is I think not excessive. Can any kind engineer tell me what I should pay to have an air eliminator fitted please?

  1. You can always have a header tank on your return to ensure that the system stays full. Then the boiler feed can draw from the header tank.

  2. T W is right, but an auto air vent fitted in the wrong position can cause the system to draw in even more air.The first thing an engineer would check is the pipe configuration on the cold feed/open vent.If that is wrong then altering it should solve the problem.Drain some water off at the mt c**k,as the system might be suffering from sludge build up,check the water to see how clear it is,if there is sludge then its possible that it is a gas that's building up in the pipes.Hydrogen gas is a bi product of the corrosion process so it could mean a power flush, but not likely.

Make sure that the system is treated with anti corrosion chemicals once the fault has been rectified.

If its not a problem with sludge, and you dont have the air problem sorted, you will have a problem with corrosion in the future.

  3. To have a "AAV" fitted should cost you no more than £100 including VAT & fittings, By a professional, But it sounds like you have a problem with the system that needs to be diagnosed & rectified first. Hope this helps :) :) :)
