Question:

Air Force! When you do start getting BAH (Housing Allowance)? In Basic?

My fiance (we're getting married in a few weeks) is going to basic on October 27th. We have an apartment and I was wondering if we will get BAH while he is in basic. I've heard many different things. If you could find anything online for me to show him that would be great too.

Thanks.

  1. He has to pass basic first, you must be married then they'll put you on a list and you get what opens up, like when applying for an apartment.

When I was married it took hubby & me about 4 months. They had us in a live in motel (apartment style) until it opened up.

I don't believe they do back pay, but that was ages ago.

  2. Yeah I would not listen to people here like the retired recruiter said. I would go talk to his recruiter--he'll know the answer.

  3. He'll get BAH during Basic.  My husband did.  It took 6 weeks but it was all there, backpaid through to when he started.  He'll also be eligible for Family Sep after 30 days.  The first paycheck is small,  But to answer your question, yes, he will get BAH.

Make sure that his recruiter gets all the paperwork from your marriage well in advance of his leaving for Basic.  I am assuming that he did tell his recruiter about his upcoming marriage BEFORE he went to MEPS and did everything.  There is alot of paperwork for married people and everything needs to be in place before he leaves.

Good Luck and welsome to the AF!!

  4. After you finish basic. Sorry, they wont pay you for it until they know you will actually be in the Air Force.

  5. No. You don't get BAH until you finish basic and MOS (job) school. Then you're a full-fledged Airman and they'll start treating you like one. Especially since you aren't married yet (and it doesn't sound like you will be when he leaves), he will not even rate to receive BAH until you guys are married.

  6. Lots of bad information....

As long as you are married before he ships, he will be eligible for BAH from day 1.  He may not get it from Day 1, it may be paid in the form of back pay once he graduates and gets off to school....he will be eligible and compensated from Day 1
