Question:

Air Handler Gone Nuts?

by  |  earlier

I'm having major issues with our Air Conditioning unit. I have a heat pump and an air handler. The system may work fine for hours and hours, and is able to maintain a cool temperature with good airflow.

Then, the airflow simply stops, and the room temperature goes up. When I check the thermostat, it indicates the system is on, but the target temperature is far below the actual room temperature. Outside, the heat pump continues to function, but in my attic, the air handler simply stops.

Sometimes, if I turn off the system at the thermostat for a couple hours, then switch it back on, it will then work. What the heck?

I had an HVAC guy come out 2 weeks ago. He said the freon was low and fixed that. However, this has definitely *not* fixed the problem. Now, he wants to completely replace the air handler. Is this a reasonable solution? It sounds like an expensive proposition.

PLEASE HELP!

Thanks a million if you can provide any assistance.

  1. Try this.

When it quits again, go to the thermostat and turn the switch from AUTO to ON. If it comes on, then there probably is a problem with the stat.

If it doesn't then it could be a problem with the blower motor itself. If you know how, get a tester and when it quits, check and see if power is going to the blower. If it is, then the motor is bad. If not, then you have to trace it back to see where the problem is.

And as someone else said, find another opinion. The first guy just wants to sell a unit

  2. i work at an hvac supplier sounds like a fan relay is bad in the air handlers, it sounds like it may be sticking, matter of fact  i know that is the problem, good luck. trust me lol the motor is not bad it is good. as i said i have only worked here twelve years, we are talking about 20-30 dollar part, a motor is around 120 dollars waste your money if you want, lol

  3. Run away from this guy as fast as you can.  If he told you the unit was low on freon, he doesn't know what he's doing.  Air conditioners do not "use up" freon, so the only way for it to be low is if there is a leak in the system.

    Get a second opinion.
