History Major

Lookin' for a Job skill that I will be good at (History Majors aren't lookin' too hot now).

Would like to have a Govt Job or the like (ex. FBI, Detective, SWAT, etc.)

Likes a challenge.

Looking for a new start

4 years of Uncle Sam owning my life, or 6 years part time with the ANG.

Any opinions? Advice? Anyone experienced the military before?

  1. Bro, you and me are in the same boat. Im 24 Poli Sci major (history minor), and am going into the Air Force for a specific skill. I want to crack into the Fed gov't, and will get my start working in intelligence. I say do Air Force, because there really isnt much out there for us that's appealing. 4 years for a great career is a good trade off in my book.

  2. Better double check - most contracts are for 8 years

  3. Go Air Force Active Duty, it's a great way ro get into a CIA, FBI career later. Being a "weekend warrior"... not so impressive. Make sure that you get into an intelligence career field. If you are close to your degree, wait it out and go in as an officer, if not, consider signing a 6 year contract, it will boost your rank to E3 automatically. All contracts are 8 years any way, 4 yrs active 4 reserve, or 6 years active 2 reserve. More than likely you'll love it and end up re-enlisting anyway. check this out, it should help alot, you can see job descriptions, tech school length and place and possible duty stations for each job. Good Luck!!

  4. If you are close to graduating, wait till then and join as an officer or ask a recruiter to guide you along. If you go reserves or guard they will help you with your schooling. Being an officer or enlisted in the USAF dosent look bad on your resume.even though you are an history major you should be able to get a great job in the USAF and possibly a new career. Good luck

  5. Air Force life is pretty good, you might actually like it. I would suggest Active Duty Air Force and if you don't like it then get out after 4 years. You can go active duty Air Force to Guard or reserve but it's hard to go from guard to Active Duty Air Force.

  6. I think you should try to get in the Air Force and be Security Forces (a cop). It would for sure be the challenge and change you are looking for, plus you will get credits toward a criminal justice degree without even actually going to class...which will also help you with your FBI, SWAT thing. Hope that helped! Good luck!
