I want to be an aviator in the armed forces , and air national guard sounds good. So does Air force though. Im only in High School, but i plan on being in the guard while going to college then becoming a pilot when i graduate. Is that possible? Is it easier becoming an air national guard pilot than an active air force pilot? are there more pilot slots in the guard?

I just basically want to know is it easier becoming a pilot in the guard rather than the active air force? And does being in the guard before being a pilot help you become a pilot?

THanks!!!!!!!

  1. Both are difficult. The ANG has a few slots every couple of years that open up and you must pass the selection board. Members that are already in the unit (enlisted members with degrees) are chosen many times, but people have been hired off the street as well. Enlist, go to school while in, and apply at the unit you join as an enlisted member. email me through my profile for more information about it

  2. NO it is not..do you think they make the guard aircraft easier to fly?   NO   DER  it is the same training.

  3. Being in both the active and guard in the past, It probably active duty that gives you the greatest chance of becoming a pilot.  Some guard units only have so many slots per year to add pilots, but active is different because you may need to move to another state where the vacancy is.

I would recommend you see if you can join Air Force or Navy ROTC so that your college is paid for, and while you are getting the degree, do what you can to increase your chances of getting a pilot slot by taking some flying lessons.  The more experience you have, the better your chances of getting a pilot slot.

    Best of luck.
