Question:

Air Sickness while flying! Any ideas?

My daughter is experiencing "Air Sickness" while flying (sweating, nausea, light headed feeling of passing out). When she was a child, she had ear infections frequently but has since outgrown them (thank Goodnes). Someone told us that if she took a nasal spray (such as Afrin) before flying, this should help her air sickness. Does anyone know if this is a good idea and worth trying?

  1. Has she tried bonine? It's also OTC. If not try that, or your doc can prescribe an RX.

  2. Afrin is a bad idea as it will dry out her nasal passages and the air in the cabin is already very dry.  It might even create nosebleeds.

Ginger tea, candies, chews, ginger ale, all are great at settling a stomach. . Try selecting the seats over the wings in an airplane and have her grab an isle seat. Not being able to see out the window might make her feel more at ease. Bring music, video games, something interesting to read, etc. Anything to keep her busy. Play get to know your neighbor. 4 hours and 47 minutes is just 2 movies and 2 good CDs.

Have her read the inflight magazine and browse through the Skymall catalog, except start at the back page and have her make her way to the front with her non-dominant hand. It will take her longer and force her to concentrate, which will take her mind off flying.

    I hope this helps.
