I'm 16 and I was wondering for the basic requirement to become a pilot and work at air canada,on the list-it said you need 1000hours of flying but can you start early with private flight school and gain hours and when I graduate from a proper university and count the 1000 hours I did when I was 16..does that work or do I have to get the hours during university or after?

Basic requirement:

* 1000 hours of fixed wing flying time

* Completion of schooling to the university entrance level. Ability to pass the Air Canada and Transport Canada medical and visual acuity requirements for a Category 1 medical certificate.

* Canadian Commercial Pilot licence, current Instrument Rating and Multi-Engine endorsement.

* Canadian citizenship or landed immigrant status.

  1. any time logged after you get your license is called PIC time (pilot in command) .. you can count any PIC time toward the 1000 hrs

  2. An hour is an hour, whether you get it when you're 16 or after university. A 1000 hrs can take anywhere from 2-5 years to get.

Anyhow, to be an Air Canada pilot the requirements you mentioned above are a minimum. Usually they would hire pilots 3000 hrs an up but other airlines such as Air Canada Jazz or smaller charters would consider a 1000 hr pilot.

Also, a majority of your hours would have to e PIC (pilot in command) which would be hard to get unless yo become a instructor or a captain of a small plane or jet. So try to take it step by step rather than jumping to the big leagues right away.

If you need a degree and a license there's a few universities and colleges that offer that now like Western and Waterloo.

Seneca College also has a degree program that gives you a frozen ATPL (airline transport) and a cadet program that gives the top students positions in Air Canada Jazz.

  3. After you'll find some information over here, the best way is to call at an aviation academy. Why don't you get information straight from the source? ;)  Success! and fly beautiful!
