Cars are a big contributer, but air conditioners must be a close second? Is this true or is industry to blame?

  1. I have noticed that people who believe in Global Warming seldom help people with science questions in other sections of Yahoo Answers. Seems contradictory to me, if they really know science and care about other people.

  2. Tell me, Greenies, is there anything that DOESN'T cause 'global warming'?

  3. Well if we can assume that people have caused the temperature to increase by a half a degree.  I would guess that cars would account for about 5 per cent or less of that.  Remember we have been emitting CO2 for hundreds of years before anyone gives an estimated amount.  Air conditioners probably account for about a fifth of cars or about 1 per cent.  That is 1 per cent of half a degree.  That would come out to 0.005 degrees.  So if you are basking right now in 20 degree temperatures, thank your air conditioners because otherwise it might be 19.995 degrees.

  4. give it a rest,it is all bullshit to get more $$ out of your pocket.wake up !

  5. Cooling uses electricity and so uses fossil fuels.

Conserving energy of all sorts is one useful thing to do.  Air conditioners come in a wide range of efficiencies.  Having an efficient one and properly insulating your home will help.

But we don't need to stop using them.

Mr B - I do answer questions in the science sections.  But frankly, there seem to be many  knowledgeable people there, and questions are generally answered well.  The same can not be said here.  Also, by far most of the questions there are simply people doing homework.  For example, few people really have burning questions on their mind about mathematics.

  6. The latest figures for North America released in December 2007 say that transportation is 30% of the problem, coal power is 40%.  Air conditioning is some fraction of that 40%.

You can browse human contributions in detail in the report below.

  7. Clean or replace dirty air conditioner filters as recommended. Save 350 lbs. of carbon dioxide and $150 per year.

  8. just to acknowledge that i have seen your question, im not sure to what degree air conditioners add to global warming, but it is probably significant enough.

Sorry i cant help you any more with this right now.  Im sure someone will be able to help you more.
