Question:

Air conditioning leaking?

My air conditioning has been leaking for 2 months now. The Landlord has pushed back replacing the leaking equipment. The first time the AC stopped working the freon was refilled at the end of our power bill. The following month the unit froze twice, and was refilled both times. The power bill averaged from $180-200 and then spiked to $400 the month where the unit was refilled twice. My guess from the unit over working trying to accomplish the same temp. I already spoke with my landlord and he is unwilling to pay the difference. What I need to know is where I can get documentation to show my landlord that he should take care of the bill and what I will need for court if it comes down to that.

  1. In the U.S.A. it is illegal to knowingly recharge a leaking system. Tell the landlord that he broke the law and he might change his tune.

  2. In Canada, it is illegal for any person or company to just refill a leaking air conditioning system with refrigerant , without repairing the leak first. It sounds like the person that did that last AC repair did just that...knowingly refilled , knowing that it was all going to just leak out again. If you called the EPA and enquired what the laws are in the USA with regards to refrigerant handling and recycling, that repair company and your landlord could be in big trouble. There is a big fine in Canada for doing such a thing. This knowledge might give you some bargaining power...again, check with the gov't first.

  3. Tell him that you will report him to the EPA because it is unlawful to knowingly operate an a/c system that is releasing refrigerant into the atmosphere. It can be up to a $10,000 fine which would serve his cheap *** right!
