Question:

Air cooled VW Beetle rust repair?

The car has surface rust but nothing really major. I would like to get it fixed as soon as possible. There is rust spots bubbling under the paint. How do I fix that? What do I use to sand it off? What products to I apply to it and how? Also what can be done about the rust that is hidden deep inside the welds/seams of the trunk lid?

  1. air cooled, water cooled bug, camaro, truck   it is all the same.  RUST NEVER SLEEPS    So, you grind it all out.  Tear out the carpeting especially on the wheels on the inside and rip the carpet off the heater channel and check the floorboards and the rear quarter panel down low.

Ask a body shop.  They will tell you the same.   Sand blaster will work too.   Get seriously rough,  then the best anti-rust primer paints.   Followed by good autobody paint on top.

  2. Your biggest concern is if the unibody is rusted out look under the doors under the running boards and see if the heat box channels are rusted out. The floor also rusts out so peel the carpet/rubber mat back and take a look.

  3. Bubbling paint usually means rusting from the inside out. I'll bet it is in the rear quarter panel around the fenders up to and behind the the side windows.
