Question:

Air flow on air conditioning filter?

I'm not going to ask a lot of stupid questions here, so overlook my lack of knowledge...

I am changing the air filter upstairs, and I don't remember which direction it was pointing.

The new filter has an arrow that says "Air flow". Well air naturally comes DOWN from the vents, so I'm assuming the arrow should be pointing down when I put it in.

However, the filter is sucked upward when the A/C is running because the unit is above the ceiling in the attic. So that would make me think the air flow is up for the filter. So then I thought the arrow should be pointing UP.

Which is correct?

Thanks

  1. When I was in grade school, I remember a teacher always used to say "there are no stupid questions."

The important thing is that you are asking the question, rather than running the risk of causing damage to the equipment. Many people don't even care, and that can drastically reduce the efficiency of the A/C.

And that's what this community is for, so kudos to you for asking :)

I can see why it might be confusing since the air does flow down from the vent, but goes up in the unit.

The arrow should point up. You knew the answer when you said that it was being sucked upward, you just didn't realize it :)

  2. Simply the arrow always points TOWARD the fan, toward the a/c.

It points in the direction the air is going and you already determined the filter is being pulled up so the air is going up and therefore the arrows should point up.

    Good Luck

  3. hmm i seriously dunno but glad to help

  4. if the air filter is being sucked up when the AC unit comes on, that's the direction of your air flow.  (the filter will try to move with the air).  Just flip your air filter arrow around whichever way the air takes it with the AC unit running.

  5. The air is going upward since the filter is sucked upward.  UP!!
