Question:

Air freshener for cockatiels?

I am considering buying a pet cockatiel in a month or two, and I know that they have very sensitive lungs. I understand to never use aerosol air freshener, and scented candles are a risk. However, can anyone tell me if there are any safe air fresheners to use (I will be keeping it in my bedroom)? Would reed diffusers be fine, or are they still risky?

Thanks!

  2. Yep, every harmful. Go here http://www.parrotcentral.net/list_of_tox... for a big list of additional things that are bad for the little guy. Good luck with him/her!

  3. No, that isn't a good idea cause of the chemicals. It will make your bird very sick. So, please don't!!

  4. Nope... all of those have chemicals in them.  If you keep your room dusted and clean (don't use harsh cleaners) you shouldn't need any of those things.  If you insist on a floral scent, get real flowers.

Scented candles and things like Lysol and Febreeze are some of the worst lung pollutants on the market.  If you love candles and need to burn them get pure beeswax candles only.  They are the only candle that produces a negative ion that won't muck up their lungs.

Remember, birds like these used to be used in mines and during WWI and WWII.  If the bird died the people knew that a chemical agent was around and to get out of there fast.  These birds are super sensitive.

A nice site that I use for finding recipes for non-toxic cleaning is www.care2.com.  Big site full of lots of stuff but they have a section on non-toxic cleaners and alternatives.

Good for you for asking before anyone got sick.
