Air gun mechanics?

Question

I am curious if an air gun can be designed to shoot bean bags for light level combat sports, almost like a nerfed version of paintball, but not as weak as Nerf guns?

Any ideas would be very helpful.

I've heard of people super-upgrading Nerf guns to do such a thing. On a Nerf gun, you'd probably have to do some work to fix any air leaks, maybe strengthen the piston or cylinder, and possibly take-apart and rebuild the entire thing.

If nothing else, you could look into getting an airsoft grenade launcher, a few airsoft grenades, and a couple other things, but this would be very expensive, as well as potentially dangerous if the beanbags were fired at people from too short a range. Keep in mind that it's possible to fire a small Nerf football (the kind with the fins) through a door with an airsoft grenade launcher, so imagine what would happen firing a beanbag as small as a hackie sack.

Since technically an airsoft grenade launcher is an airgun, it is possible, but modifying some other type of airgun to fire a beanbag would be impossible...I can see some potential in the guts of a super soaker, but it wouldn't be practical for what you're thinking of doing.
