iv been on a few planes and am off on holiday again in a few month , i am looking fwd to going but every time i go away ,usually the day before i get very anxious n nervy about the plane , i keep thinking it will blow up or have terrorists on board

when at the airport im like a nervous wreck usually scanning the airport to spot terrorists, i hate the plane taking off i dont feel safe, am thinking it will skid or come straight back down or flip over etc . once im properly in the air and not climbing i usually settle down and feel okay unless there is turbulence then im scared again

landing does not bother me cus i know i can get off the thing

why do i feel like this when i have flown before? is there anyhthing i can do or take to calm my nerves , i have 2 young kids so cannot be asleep or out of my face etc

  1. well, I have  a phobia, too ( of something else) I TRY not to pay attention by listening to music or thinking of something else. Try talking to your kids when you start to get stressed to help take your mind off of it.

May be easier said then done, but it can help.

    Good luck.

  2. Fear of flying is very common.  It is a lack of control and that you don't really get a second chance if your plane crashes.  Try to bear in mind that air travel is the safest mode of transport and buy yourself some Rescue Remedy from Boots.  I also hate flying and get in a right state.

  3. It is very common to be scared when flying. Terrorists are too much of cowards to do that anymore. Trust me it will be fine. The easiest part is taking off! Nothing can happen during that time

  4. Just try and get a perspective of just how many flights take to the skies every second around the world, and how many of these have an incident worth noting? Practically none, ever.

I'm scared witless at the idea of being 38,000 feet or thereabouts with nothing under me, especially when we start bouncing around in turbulence, but it's part and parcel of flying every day for millions of people and really nothing to worry about (easier said than done I know) but try to relax, watch other passengers calmly sitting reading and chatting and realise it's just a normal, everyday, run of the mill flight.

    Happy flying!

  5. Turn your fear into an excitment. You just have to show you are not scared, because if you do, your children will be scared too.

  6. i flew to usa last year, first time and a long way from u/k.bit worried about it as on my own ,but it was brill, once i found out what to do and where to go at airport. Have a nice holiday and try not to worry .it is the safest form of transport

  7. As a flight attendant I fly 3 to 5 flights a day nearly every day of the week. That is A LOT of flying and I've never had a frightening experience yet! That makes for pretty good odds for you don't you think?

I did have a passenger not long ago who requested to talk to the pilots when she boarded the plane. I asked them for permission and they agreed to talk to her. She explained her fear to them and they assured her they would be careful and make announcements warning of turbulence and what not. She told me that talking to the flight crew gave her a sense of control and helped her feel more at ease. You might try that. Just be very respectful of the flight attendant when you ask as some are not as friendly as me! ;0)
