Question:

Air travel with liquids?

I recently traveled out of the country by plane with a friend of mine and her mother, and met them there. On the way there, I had one suitcase and I checked it, while they each had one suitcase that they carried on board with them.

On the way home, I carried my suitcase on with me. I'm used to checking my bags instead of keeping them with me, so I forgot to worry about the liquids in my bag, and I had a few things confiscated (shampoo, toner, etc.).

What I want to know is how they got all of their liquids on the plane with them while keeping their luggage with them (I know they had liquids with them, for sure). How do you get through security with hair gels and things? What is it that I was supposed to do in order the keep my stuff?

P.S. Thanks a lot. Sorry if this sounds dumb, but I'm not very familiar with the policy.

  1. It has to be 3 ounces or less. Unless they bought it in the airport then carried on.

  2. I agree with Amy--if their products in their carry ons were more than 3 oz., they probably bought them after they went through security.

  3. The new rule for liquids in the airport are that you need to put small liquids in a small ziploc bag, i'd say about 7 x 8. It is much better to go to the store and pick up travel size items that are 3 oz or less. When I travel now, I put my gel, shampoo, etc in the front of my suitcase and wrap them up tightly and check it in. It is less stress going through the security gate.

  4. Only 3 oz. bottles can be carried on the plane with you.  Bigger bottles of stuff have to be in your checked luggage.
