i was recently hit by a drunk driver, they totaled my car, it was a 2004 kia optima, they hit the passenger side door, i was the only one in the car thank god, the passenger airbags never went off, i called kia about it today because i was upset with the airbags, if i had a passenger they would no longer be alive so im glad i didnt have one, but kia told me they have a 120lb limit for the airbags to go off, it sounded like they were making this up so i was wondering if anyone had clue if that were true? Do they have a weight limit and if so how much? i googled it and didnt really find anything helpful... so i really need an answer

  1. It wont go off if you were hit on the side..................

Airbags deploy only when they might be needed to prevent serious injury.

Frontal driver and passenger airbags are designed to inflate in moderate to severe frontal crashes only equivalent to hitting a solid barrier at 10-12 mph.

Some manufacturers use different inflation thresholds depending on whether people are using their safety belts.

Thresholds of 10-12 mph typically are used for unbelted occupants, but thresholds are higher — about 16 mph — for belted occupants because the belts alone are likely to provide adequate protection up to these moderate speeds

  2. ok. if there is an option for when someone sits in the passanger seat you see a light that says air bag on. they must be over 100 pounds for this to happen. Yes kia is right. since there was no one in the passanger seat. there was no air bags on for the passenger seat. because there was no passenger detected.

  3. Normally if it was the side of the car and you don't have a window airbag, your talking about the dash board bags the impact would have not been in the right place for it to go off.

  4. front air bags only go off if you are hit in the front.

kia is right... my car has a light that says "passenger air bag on" and it also has a switch to turn it off manually.  i dont know what the weight limit is, but it always turns on when someone sits in it.

  5. Airbags go off in a straight-on front impact, for every make and model.  And yes, newer airbags have a weight limit so they don't blow and kill children.

  6. ****, your cars screwed
