  1. Get one that does both.  That way you have the capacity to do volume stuff as well as small runs for detail.  I use Badger airbrushes.

  2. O.K. this is going to be a tough one for me. because I hate airbrushed T-shirts, but I love airbrush, and I really enjoy helping young airbrushers getting started. That being said, here goes.

Most T-shirt artists use multiple siphon feed guns. A separate gun for each color. Because time is money, they'll put a large bottle of color on each gun and leave it there all day. This means no stopping to flush a gun out between color changes. Just pick up the gun with the color you need, and keep painting. You'll see airbrush tattooists doing the same thing, for the same reason. Time efficiency!

Now for my personal preference. Gravity feed. I don't do T-shirts (obviously), I do fine art, illustrative work, and custom paint. You'll find most professionals in these fields using gravity feeds. Why? They work better! Siphon feed guns require higher working pressure, because they have to draw the paint upward. You can use much less pressure with a gravity feed gun, giving you better control. Siphon feed guns are also much harder to clean, and can sometimes just start acting weird for no apparent reason. Gravity feed guns are easier to clean, and seldom get weird on you. Even with multiple color changes, with a gravity feed, just flush, wipe the bowl with a paper towel, flush again and change your color. If you try that with a siphon, sometimes a little of the previous color will be hiding in there somewhere, and show it's ugly head right in the middle of your new color.

Personally I'd go with a gravity feed. Especially if your only buying one. I used siphon feed guns for years when I first started, but once I started using gravity feeds The quality of my work got so much better. I honestly haven't picked up a siphon feed in years.

If you have any other airbrush questions, feel free to email me. I'm always glad to help.

  3. Many airbrushes will do both. I have a Pasche unit that does in any event.

Generally I prefer to use gravity. It's easier to change the cups, wastes less paint and keeps th egun lighter.
