  1. The Airbus A321 is the nearest competition when the 757 was in production.  It has been replaced by other Boeing models like:

    Boeing 737-900ER

    Boeing 767-200

The 757 was originally designed to be a 727 replacement. Serious study was given to retrofitting 727s with updated engines while redesigning the tail to eliminate the center engine.  The redesign was found to be uneconomical idea and the project was dropped in favor of an all new design.  The 757 was originally seen as a compliment to the 767 but it ended up having not much less seating capacity than the 767-200.  A few airlines wanted a plane with slightly more seating capacity of the 727-stretch.  That's how the plane grew larger.

The 757 went out of production but the type sold more than a thousand examples.

  2. btw, b757 is ugly...IMO

  3. airbus A321s

both are single aisle, no more than 200 passengers or so. A321 is fly-by wire- but 757 is not. they both have comparable internal inertial navigation systems.

757 beats the A321 on the range and payload (passengers) side but A321 have better seat/mile costs.

A321s, A319, A318s and A320s really shine on shorter routes and most European airlines have fleets of those. American airlines employ 757s a bit more because, well, boeing is American and because their flight are mostly cross country and cross-atlantic.

757 was designed to replace the 727 but most airlines found it to be "too much" because it had 50% more fuel capacity and 25% more passenger capacity. then, the airbus 320 came along and hooked some customers.
