Aircraft 747 - 400?

if a 747-400 suffered complete engine failre on all 4 engines at a height of 35,000ft with 450 passengers and a weight of 800,000lbs all up and flying at 450mph How far would the a/c be able to glide before hitting the ground/sea Also if you could tell me how you worked out the answer

  1. What is the rate of descent? To maintain 450 mph with no engine power your rate of descent would have to be very high. If the rate of descent is 2500 ft per min than you would be able to fly for 14 minutes until you crashed at sea level. If your descent rate is 4000 ft per minute than you would have only about 9 minutes of flying time. At that speed you are traveling 7.5 miles a minute so once you have the amount of time you can stay aloft at that speed than you can equate the distance traveled


  2. the 747 would glide and it depends on how experienced the pilot is

    this actually happened with a ba 747 a few years ago   ( but one engine regained power)

  3. The 747-400 at 800,000 lbs would have a glide ratio of about 9:1, which means it could glide about 59 to 60 miles assuming perfect conditions and optimum flying skills.

    In practical terms say 35 miles.
