Question:

Airline Pilot Height Regulations?

I am 14 years old and pretty tall for my age. (5' 11" atm)

I would like to be a pilot someday and one question I have is, "Is there such thing as too tall to be a pilot?" because I am afraid over the years I might grow up to around 6'3"?

  1. No problems.

  2. 6'3" will not be  a problem at all. 6' 6" may be.

But you will have problems getting into the trainer aircraft like a Cessna 152. You may need something bigger like a Cessna 172 or 182.

  3. Well, at 6'3" you could have problems with some airplanes, such as the Rockwell AC690 Commander that I fly right now. Many other corporate-type  planes such as Lear Jets are pretty small, and many trainers are downright tiny for someone that tall. Head room is often not as much of a problem (it is in the Commander) but  leg room can be a killer, especially on long flights. I'm 6'1" and have been somewhat uncomfortable in many of the planes I've flown and it has gottem worse as I've gotten older because I don't contort as well as I used to. Hopefully by the time you reach my age you'll be flying airliners.

  4. I think the military has height requirements, but to fly for fun or for a living, no I don't think there are any unless you are 7 feet tall or something insane like that.

Also, to the  6 footer who has issues squeezing into the 152, I owned a 150 at 6'3" for a few years and never got cramped...odd.  Having said that I flew one with a 260 pound CFI for a while...talk about make sure the tanks are only half full.
