Question:

Airline rules for a first time flier

Hi, I've never flown before and my first trip is coming up this Monday. I looked on the airline rules and I was wondering why I can't pack some 3 ounce toiletry items in my suitcase? Why do they all have to go in carry on? Also, is it okay if I pack my flat iron in my suitcase? And do you have any last minute tips for someone who has never flown before? Thanks for all your help! :)

  1. You can take liquids larger than 3.4 oz in your checked bag just not your carry on. You can take your flat iron in either suitcase. All your liquids in your carry on need to be 3.4 oz or less and in a ziploc bag. Food items containing liquid or gel are prohibited, so no bottles of water or fruit cups. You are allowed to take food items which I would advise you to do because the food at the airport is very expensive. Also one thing I do is carry an empty water bottle and fill it up after I go through security. It saves money. Also make sure you dress comfortably and don't wear a lot of jewelry. When you go through security you will have to take your jewelry off in addition to your shoes, jacket, and belt. If you have a laptop or portable DVD they also may ask you to take it out of the case.

  2. You CAN put whatever you're allowed in your carry-on, in your SUITCASE.

    But NOT vice versa.

You can put 3oz. or BIGGER liquids inside your suitcase if you want.

BUT, you can ONLY put 3oz. liquids inside your CARRY ON.

Less for carry on; and as much as you want in your suitcase (or whatever the limit is)

I believe you can put an iron in your suit case.

If all someone has is a carry on, and they want to put something bigger than 3oz. liquid/gel inside, then tough luck, because you'll have to check the bag in, or throw it out.

-Get there early, get to your flight an hour before departure for domestic flights, and 2 hours or so for international flights. (I once got there 30 minutes before my flight, and I almost missed it.  But luckily the flight was delayed and I was there just in time)

-Check in online, or at the kiosk, I usually get to choose good seats when I check in like an hour before the departure somehow.

    -Bring your ID or passport.

-Make sure you know which terminal you're going to. Different terminals for different airlines.

    -FOLLOW THE SIGNS

-You can grab some snacks after security

-Be ready when going through security, take off your shoes, laptops out, throw away your drink and have your boarding pass/ID ready

-Pop your ears on the flight! Or they'll feel really weird

-Don't drink too many liquids or you'll need to pee

    Good luck!
