  1. For one it depends on where in Spain you want to go.  Im assuming Madrid.  From the west coast, you cant get to Spain Non-Stop.  You have to stop at a hub in the east coast, (JFK or ATL with Delta) then continue on.  The west services Asia non-stop, the east services Europe.  So, what I suggest is take the cheapest fare you found on Orbitz, then go to the airline's website.  You can get a more direct route that way and keep the connections to one.

Northwest goes to Amsterdam non-stop from SFO then connect to Madrid.  Its a codeshare with KLM and KLM operates the flight.  What ever route you find going you can find returning.  I see they have double connections on the return for most iteniraries, but you can find single connections on the return on the individual websites.

  2. The most frequently traveled airline between USA and Spain is American and Iberia.  I know because I've used it for 10 years for transporting my step-children back and forth.  The most convientient way to reserve is to call the airlines directly.
