  1. The probability of a crash in commercial aviation is about the same as that of a hurricane blowing through a junkyard and spontaneously assembling a fully functional Boeing 747.

Some planes go 2 times the speed of sound or more.

commercial airliners typically cruise at 300 - 450 mph

  2. 1 in more than a million

The industry has learned from its mistakes ever since the 1920s. It is extremely unlikely that something unexpected and incurable happens on your flight. There are 6000 flights minimum a day in the US alone, yet there isn't a crash or other severe incident resulting in the loss of life in many years.

Airplanes, at cruising altitude, usually between 30,000 and 41,000 feet (some shorter flights fly lower and are slower), will travel over the ground at about 480 to 560 mph.  (Mach 0.76 to Mach .82)--actual airspeed is lower because of the differences in air density at high altitude (less dense)

  3. The chances of a plane crashing are slim to none.  Everything on the aircraft has redundant systems.  Most accidents are from pilot error.  most of those incidents take place in general aviation aircraft (Cessna 172).  A plane can cruise from as slow as 80knots to as fast as mach 2.
