  1. Not sure if you mean a mechanical bearing, or an azimuth bearing, which is a direction given by an instrument in most cases.

  2. It can mean the direction to an airplane, measured at the observer's location.

  3. You may be referring to a directional bearing. This is the angle from the nose of the aircraft to any point some distance away, i.e., the destination airport. It can be stated as a magnetic bearing, or a relative bearing. The magnetic bearing is the actual compass direction from the aircraft to the destination point. The relative bearing is the angle from the nose of the aircraft to the destination point.

As an example, if an aircraft is flying directly east, and the destination airport is off the right wing, then the "relative bearing" to that airport is 90 degrees. The magnetic bearing would be 180 degrees.

Most airports use transmitters that can be detected by aircraft instruments. A needle on the instrument points toward the transmitter, providing the bearing to that point. The pilot can turn the aircraft so that the needle is pointing straight ahead and fly directly to that point.

Modern electronics now use GPS or inertial guidance, and the equipment can display a bearing to the pilot without the use of radio.

  4. Your reference is to an "air" bearing, I believe, in which a rotating part is supported by a cushion of air as opposed to direct contact with a conventional metal bearing or bushing.

  5. a spherical steel ball.
