i'm going to be on the plane for 14 hours tomorrow, economy class (real fun) and am planning to survive on chips and breakfast bars in my bag because i CANNOT STAND airplane meals.

so my question is: do you like the food they serve on airplanes?

maybe it's just me, but the smell of them is enough to make me puke. i once made the very sad mistake of eating some airplane "omelettes" and, well, the rest of the flight didn't go too well.

  1. I've had some pretty awful airplane food myself. They chuck something at you that they say is chicken (even though it looks just like the person's next to you and they ordered the pork). Then, to try and saw into this mess while getting jabbed in the ribs from your neighbor because of the cramped seats. All while not spilling your miniature drink!

    *sigh*

Yikes. I agree with you...it's some pretty awful stuff. Good luck on your flight!

  2. I had to go on an 18 hour buss ride to DC back in march for my American History class... I survived on Goldfish, Amp, random candy, and the occasional stop at Burger King. lolz

airplanes suck as far as food goes....they usually give you peanuts and crackers/cheese. lolz. even first class kinda sucks these days

  3. The airline food is the exact same as food on the ground.  It's made by the same companies in kitchens at the airport, and only reheated on the plane.  I think it's all in your head.  You probably don't feel good on the plane to begin with, so you blame it on the food.

  4. it's gross sometimes and good others, i like the little pretzels they give you

  5. Eh...it's ok, I suppose. I've only had one meal that I would actually count as somewhat "good" on an airplane - it was chicken with penne pasta and pesto sauce on an American Airlines flight. The sauce was so good that it covered up everything else, haha! It did give me heartburn, though. :-/

I think you've got a good plan going on there - chips and breakfast bars are a traveler's best friends.

  6. As far as airline food on airlines in America, you'd have to be in First Class to get those. Otherwise, it's either a little lunch box of snacks, or some peanuts or pretzels, etc. When I flew to Australia on Qantas (this is in economy, mind you; and that flight was nearly 14 hrs from Los Angeles to Melbourne, Australia), the food was amazing..! This was no fish or chicken surprise; this was food that you'd prolly get from a corner bistro!

The thing that makes people think airplane food is garbage is when you're that high in the air, it tends to alter your taste buds. If you were to try the food on the ground, it'd be okay, maybe not gourmet but edible. But when you're so many thousands of feet in the air, the pressure has a temporary effect on your body (the ear popping, etc).

Try it with some food you bring from home, fast food, etc next time you fly. Have a bit before you take off and see how it tastes. Then, when you can move about the cabin, have a bit and see if there's any difference in how it tastes..
