I own a few knives, and I am spending a year in Japan (I live is australia).

Will they be fine in my main luggage (stored underneath), or do I have to declare them and lock them up?? Or can I not take them at all?

  1. I think u can put it in the bag that u don't carry along with u into the cabin.

  2. Good question. You could try checking Australia's equivelant of USA's TSA. I think when flying in the US you can have "some" knives if they are within certain spec's (length of blade) IF they are stowed in your checked baggage. But check with Aussies TSA (or whatever its called over there) to be sure. Or maybe call the airport your flying out of & ask customer service.

  3. I took a Samurai sword from Hawaii to Vancouver on Air Canada post 9/11.  You just have to pack it right and check it.

  4. You Should Send Them In Mail If Possible .. I Doubt They Will Let You Take Them Inless They Storage It In Cargo or Put It On Another Plane.

  5. JUST ASK THE AIRLINE A FEW DAYS AHEAD .

  6. You can check them in.

  7. Knives/swords/etc. are allowed in checked luggage (the luggage that goes under the plane) in the United States.  The only requirement is that they be packed in such a way that it protects airline and security workers from injury (including if they search your bag by hand).  It doesn't look like there are any differences in Australian regulations.  Make sure they are in a knife sheath, case, or something similar.  I'd still contact the airline first just to make sure of their specific policy.

The bigger problem might be with Japanese customs and immigration.  Hunting guns, swords, and "etc." require a permit.  I'm not sure what all falls under "etc," but it's worth researching before you leave.  Here's a link to prohibited and restricted items when entering Japan: http://www.customs.go.jp/english/summary...

Also check with Australia customs for entering the country again on the other side of the trip.

    Enjoy your year in Japan!

  8. I think you mean "airliners". "Airplanes" include private jets and we're cool with most stuff, so long as it's not hazmat. To equate all airplanes with airliners is to overlook a large and much more enjoyable segment of jet travel.

  9. It's mainly depending on their size, and their design purpose. If you carry your collection of samurai blades, then yes I should report it. Usually the law demands "storage on a place not accessable during flight" for weaponry. Since it are knives you are talking about I don't think it's a problem to carry them in your main luggage. Only make sure that customs aren't gonna make trouble, but the airline I don't think will have any problems with it.
