Question

What do you need to ride an airplane. I am going from Dallas to New York. What do they ask for like a passport.?

no they don't ask for a passport for domestic flights they will ask you for your ID and then they will give you your boarding pass so the answer is no

It depends on your age and if you are traveling alone..  If you are under 18 and with parent or guardian all you need is a ticket, but having a govt. issued ID will speed the process.

If you are over 18 you need a govt. issued ID (drivers license, passport).

If you are under 18 and travelling alone, you should also have an ID.  While it is not technically required, you will probably be selected for screening at the security checkpoint if you do not have one, and at the very least will need to fill out annoying paperwork.
