Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi visits Shaukat Khanum cancer hospital
Prince of Pakistan, Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi, accompanied with his wife, Faha Akmal Makhdoom, visited Shaukat Khanum Cancer Hospital, Pakistan’s biggest cancer hospital, this week.
Pakistani number one, Qureshi married Makhdoom this weekend at the Garrison Country Club where the third day of ceremony took place. Exchange of vows and arrival of bride to the groom took place on Saturday.
The newly-weds paid visit to the largest cancer hospital of the region where two Afghani girls received them. The twin sisters suffered same type of cancer and were treated without charges since this hospital treats poor
without charges.
"Tennis has blessed me so much this year," said Qureshi, "Making the Barclay's ATP World Tour Finals opened my eyes and gave me hope to work even harder for next year. I felt that if I can give some hope to others who suffer
from life's challenges they too might fight harder as well. The lessons I have learnt from tennis I would like to give back to those in need of hope and inspiration."
Qureshi partnered with Rohan Bopanna qualified for the year-ending Barclays ATP World Tour Finals held in London. The Indo Pak Express derailed at the mega event with a disappointing performance but they enjoyed a successful
season. They won their maiden year-to-date and their second career title at the Gerry Weber Open in Halle (battled past Dutch number one Robin Haase and Canadian rising star Milos Raonic in a three set thriller in the title-round). The high flying duo kept
their momentum running and reached far in many tournaments this season, eventually climbing to their career best rank at number five in the ATP World Tour Doubles Rankings.
In October, the duo conquered If Stockholm Open and claimed their second title of the season (crushed Brazilians, Marcelo Melo and Bruno Soares, with a breadstick). They then capped the season by winning their first Master
event i.e. Paris Masters 1000 event in November. The pair dumped local stars, Julien Benneteau and Nicolas Mahut in straight sets in the final round.
The Indo Pak tandem has now parted ways; Bopanna has paired up with his compatriot Mahesh Bhupathi in order to qualify for the Olympics while Qureshi is teaming up with Curacao Jean-Julien Rojer in 2012.
"We want to cement our places in the Olympic Games and have decided to play with new partners in the doubles," Pakistani told the Press Trust of India.
The Indo Pak Express has been dissolved but Qureshi’s work of bringing the two rival nations together and partnering with Bopanna, despite resilience from some sects, will always be remembered by people of both nations.
