Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi does Pakistan proud again
Pakistan's Tennis ace Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi did his country proud yet again as the International Olympic Commission announced to display Aisam and teammate Rohan Bopanna’s shirts at their Museum in Lausanne, Switzerland.
With the slogan “Stop War, Start Tennis” imprinted across their shirts, Qureshi and Bopanna have been wearing them since the 2010 Wimbledon Championship. Additionally, in recognition of their peace slogan, the “World Peace and Sport Organisation” of Monaco
gave the Asian pair the honorary “Peace Image of the Year” Award.
Furthermore, Prime Minister of Pakistan, Yousaf Raza Gilani recently elected Aisam as the United Nations Development Project National Goodwill Ambassador. According to Qureshi, one of his main motives will be to raise funds for the 20 million flood-affected
Pakistanis. In addition to this, Aisam will be helping the United Nations Development Programme to enhance their image in Pakistan and assisting them with various other projects.
Aisam became the first-ever Pakistani athlete to have been appointed Goodwill Ambassador. In the year 2003, the professional also founded the “Haq Foundation.” The non-profit charity-based organisation helped the victims of the earthquake that hit Pakistan
in 2005. Aisam is also a member of the “Champions for Peace” club. The club consists of sportspeople who choose to spread peace through sports. The club was formed by a Monaco based organisation by the name of “Peace and Sport.”
“We are very proud of Aisam's achievements on the court, but we are most proud of his efforts to help his country in these challenging times. We greatly appreciate the attention of the professional tennis community thinking of Pakistan while so many of its
people continue to suffer,” stated Syed Dilawar Abbas, President of the Pakistan Tennis Federation.
Qureshi will be departing for India soon to take part in the Chennai championships before heading out to Australia to participate in the ATP championships before gearing up for the 2011 Australian Open in Melbourne.
