Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi gets top tennis stars to help Pakistani flood victims – Tennis News
Pakistani ace Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi bagged in the support of top tennis stars namely Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Caroline Wozniacki, Ana Ivanovic and many more to raise money in a charity auction in order to help
flood victims in the north western and southern part of his country.
A finalist at the Men’s and Mixed doubles at the 2010 US Open, Qureshi showed his humanity side again after convincing tennis super stars Nadal, Djokovic, Federer, Andy Murray, Maria Sharapova, Ivanovic, Wozniacki to donate their
gears to help flood hit areas of his countries especially in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Sindh provices. They all agreed to donate Qureshi their apparel and equipment to be auctioned off to raise funds for the disaster hit areas.
“Infact Federer, Andy Murray, Novak Djokovic, Caroline Wozniacki and Ana Ivanovic have already sent their gear for the auction which will be held from the United Nations platform,” the Pakistani star said. “The auction will be
held sometime in November or December and we hope to raise considerable funds for the flood victims,” he added.
Qureshi also convinced his doubles partner Rohan Bopanna who not only agreed to help him but assures to convince more Indian tennis stars to raise the money.
Heavy monsoon rain took many lives and left thousands of people homeless. Near 1.2 million houses were destroyed and these are the figures which were recorded.
The local government and the United Nations pleaded for $357 million to help the seven million people hit by the natural disaster.
“Pakistani people respond to appeals from sports personalities and already people are contacting me and telling me they want to help out. The response has been very encouraging,” Qureshi said.
The 31-year-old Pakistani didn’t stop his efforts here. He is planning to visit Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s governor in Peshawar to re-create Pakistan Tennis Club there which is Pakistan’s only tennis centre founded by the founder of
Pakistan, Muhammad Ali Jinnah.
This is not the first time the Pakistani number one has helped his country. He has its own organisation, Haq Foundation which helps the poor and needy of Pakistan. Few months back, his foundation teamed up with ATP Aces for Charity
grant programme to donate $10,000 to the flood recovery programmes held by United Nations in the country. They donated this amount to the people who suffered from the floods last year which resulted in destruction of thousands of villages, affected 800,000
families and took many lives.
