The Belgian stopper has been a long-term target of Arsenal, AC Milan and Tottenham Hotspur, and now the Magpies are also interested in acquiring his services.
Reports from Amsterdam Arena confirm that Newcastle United are taking keen interest in signing Ajax Amsterdam defender, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jan-Vertonghen-c17814, in the upcoming winter transfer market.
The 24-year-old is a product of the Amsterdam giants' renowned youth academy, Jong Ajax. The Belgian stopper started his professional career with his parent club in a Champions League encounter against Copenhagen in August 2006.
The highly-rated central defender has thus far represented the Amsterdam giants in 139 games, providing rock solid defence while netting also netting an impressive 18 goals.
Vertonghen played a key role in De Joden’s Eredivisie triumph. His exceptional performances at the back earned him interest from a host of elite European clubs.
The central defender remained heavily linked with a move to join AC Milan, Tottenham Hotspur, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Valencia-c40863 earlier this summer. However, none of the aforementioned clubs came up with a concrete offer to lure the stopper
away from Amsterdam.
Although the Los Che tabled a bid to acquire his services, the Belgian stopper turned down their offer on the final day of the summer transfer window and opted to stay at Amsterdam Arena for another season.
Reports indicate that the English Premier League outfit has informed the Belgian International’s agent about its interest. However, sources close to the 24-year-old indicate that it is unlikely that he would be moving to http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/England-c749 in the upcoming winter transfer
market.
The Belgian stopper has an ongoing contract at Amsterdam Arena that runs until the summer of 2013. However, reports suggest that an offer in the region of 14 million Euros would be enough to lure the central defender away from Amsterdam Arena.
Newcastle have made a brilliant start to their 2011/12 campaign, currently sitting seventh in the league table. However, a string of injuries to their back-line has tempted http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Alan-c4244 Pardew, the Magpies head coach, to sign a good defender in January transfer
window, and Vertonghen seems like a perfect addition to his squad.
