The former http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Barcelona-c38604 player has confessed that the Belgian international’s impending move to the English Premier League outfit would be completed in the coming days, but has admitted that the stopper must start training
with the squad if the move falls apart.
Ajax Amsterdam head coach, Frank de Boer, has revealed that http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jan-Vertonghen-c17814’s proposed move to join Tottenham Hotspur is on the verge of completion.
The Belgian stopper had long been linked with summer switch to White Hart Lane, but the deal has hit a snag over his transfer fee.
De Joden are demanding 15 million Euros for their prized asset, whose contract is due to expire in the summer of 2013. However, Lilywhites are not agreeing to pay anything more than 12 million Euros.
However, De Boer has now confirmed that that two side are close to agreeing terms over the transfer of Vertonghen.
“We're very close. But if the deal is not done, Jan must start his training next week with us. I was in the same situation [when I left Ajax for Barcelona in 1999]. But, eventually, I expect the deal will be done. I expect everything
will be alright”, the former Dutch international was quoted as saying to the media.
Vertonghen, who came through the ranks of the fabled Ajax’s youth academy, started his professional career in the 2006/07 season, and has thus far made 155 appearances for the Amsterdammers while netting 23 goals along the way.
His consistent performances at the heart of the Amsterdam giants’ defence have garnered him interest from a host of elite European clubs including the likes of Manchester United, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Arsenal-c38429, AC Milan and Bayern Munich.
However, the Belgian stopper has opted to move to the Spurs in the ongoing summer transfer window.
De Boer, who took over the managerial hot seat at Amsterdam Arena in December 2010 from Martin Jol, has guided De Joden to two back-to-back Eredivisie titles. Much of the credit of Ajax's recent success goes to their strong back-line,
which includes Gregory van der Wiel, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Toby-Alderweireld-c35183, Jan Vertonghen and Nicolai Boilesen.
The Dutch mentor knows that it will not be an easy task to find a perfect replacement for Vertonghen, should he joins Tottenham.
“We need a player with experience when Jan leaves. Toby [Alderweireld] will be the first one to fill in, but he still has much to learn. We know who the new captain will be, but first Jan has to leave”, De Boer concluded.
