The Amsterdammers secured a hard fought stalemate in their UEFA Champions League tie against Manchester City, but the former Barcelona player insisted that his side could have emerge victorious.
Ajax Amsterdam head coach, Frank de Boer, has revealed that his side’s 2-2 stalemate in their recent UEFA Champions League meeting against Manchester City at City of Manchester Stadium on Tuesday, November 6, has left all the players disappointed.
The Amsterdammers commenced proceedings erratically away from home, but Siem de Jong managed to give his side an early lead against the run of play within 10 minutes of action.
Seven minutes later, De Jong netted his second of the evening to double his side’s advantage. The Citizens managed to pull one back in the 22nd minute through Yaya Toure, before http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Sergio-c33030 Aguero eventually restoring parity in the 74th minute to seal a point.
And De Boer revealed that his side was disappointed with the stalemate at the end.
“Before the match started, we would have taken a 2-2 draw here. But after the match I have the feeling that the players were actually disappointed with the result. It is a good sign that the players were disappointed with this result. We could have taken a giant step tonight”, the Dutch trainer was quoted as saying to the media in the post-match press conference.
The former Barcelona player expressed his dismay over his side conceding the equaliser out of nothing.
“They scored their second goal out of nothing was very disappointing for us. But you know when you play here, it will get tough”, De Boer added.
The Amsterdam giants will lock horns against Borussia Dortmund, who are sitting at the top of Group D, in their next UEFA Champions League game at Amsterdam Arena on November 21.
And the 42-year-old tactician has expressed confidence that his side can still progress through to the next phase of the Europe’s most prestigious club competition.
“We aim to stay in the Champions League, and although Dortmund are very strong, we proved over there that we are capable of playing good football”, De Boer concluded.
Ajax are currently sitting third in their Group D.
