Ajax captain fined and banned over biting incident
Ajax captain Luis Suarez has been fined and banned for two games by his club over an incident in which he bit Otman Bakkal of PSV Eindhoven on the shoulder.
The incident took place in a 0-0 draw between the teams on Saturday 20 November, and striker Suarez could face further sanctions from the Dutch Football Association. They are going to probe the incident
which the game's referee, Bjorn Kuipers, did not witness.
Suarez, who has netted seven times in the league for his club this season, bit into Bakkal in injury time of the match after his team-mate Rasmus Lindgren was issued with a red card for a reckless tackle
on Ibrahim Afellay. Bakkal and Suarez got into a heated argument and after Bakkal stepped on Suarez' foot, the Uruguay international bit his shoulder.
Dutch giants Ajax claimed that Suarez' fine would be donated to charity, but did not reveal how much the forward would pay as a penalty for his actions.
Suarez will miss the Eredivisie matches against VV Venlo and NEC Nijmegen and NEC Nijmegen.
Before the suspension and fine were announced, Ajax manager Martin Jol told reporters that Suarez would still play in the UEFA Champions League match against Real Madrid.
He said that: "I don't know if he bit hard but this morning I spoke about it with Luis. The outcome of our conversation we will announce after the match against Real Madrid, but he will be our captain
against the Spaniards.”
Suarez was also the centre of controversy during his country's 2010 FIFA World Cup quarter-final match against Ghana, when he stopped Dominic Adiyiah's goalbound shot with his hands in the last minute
of extra-time. He was sent off for his actions, but Uruguay progressed to the semi-final after a successful penalty shoot-out.
