Ajax Amsterdam have confirmed the signing of Waalwijk winger, Derk Boerrigter. The player was strongly linked with the club following a series of outstanding performances during the 2010/11 season but the transfer fee issue was becoming a hurdle between
the player and the club. Ajax also tried to acquire him on-loan during the January transfer window but the attempt went unsuccessful.
This is the second time that the youngster has signed for the Amsterdammers since he first joined the club’s senior side in 2006 but left the club without featuring in a single game. Ajax officials expressed their delight at the signing of this versatile
player and hoped that Boerrigter could prove to be as influential as he was at Waalwijk. The 24-year-old also seemed pleased with the deal and confirmed that he would do his level best in order to help the club retain their crown.
The youngster started his playing career with Ajax and made his way into the senior line-up after spending a couple of years with the club’s youth side. The player was just 20 years of age then and was still learning the art of football. His inconsistent
performances hampered his chances of getting into the first team and the player was subsequently loaned out to another Dutch club, HFC Haarlem, in 2007. At Harlem, he made eight appearances, netting in one goal during the process.
In the same year, the 24-year-old made a permanent move to FC Zwolle, where he made 63 League appearances from which he bagged 11 goals. He then joined Waalwijk in 2009 and enjoyed a decent run which saw him score 25 goals from 64 league appearances. In
the 2010/11 season, Boerrigter scored 18 times which propelled the Dutch champions into making a move for the youngster.
Ajax coach, Frank de Boer, also expressed his delight at this deal and praised the youngster for working hard upon his game. He further added, "I am happy he is joining us. Derk has developed himself very well in recent years. His advantage is that he already
knows the club. With him we will have more options on the wings. I have faith he will develop further for us."
The player would hope to cement his place in the club’s starting line-up in the wake of an impressive 2010/11 season. He would also hope of a call to Dutch national squad for which he is yet to play. Ajax were crowned the Dutch champions last month in what
was their 30th title overall.
