The 26-year-old has proved his worth between the sticks since the departure of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Maarten-Stekelenburg-c22998 and has been rewarded with a new deal until the summer of 2015.
Reports from Amsterdam Arena confirm that Ajax Amsterdam goalkeeper, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Kenneth-Vermeer-c20618, has signed an extension to his ongoing contract.
The 26-year-old’s current contract ran until the summer of 2013, but the new deal will keep him at Amsterdam until the end of the 2014/15 campaign.
Vermeer is a product of the Amsterdammers fabled youth academy, Jong Ajax, and started his professional career in the 2005/06 season. The Dutch shot-stopper failed to feature regularly between the sticks for the Amsterdam giants,
as Maarten Stekelenburg remained the No. 1 choice at Amsterdam Arena.
In the 2008/09 season, Stekelenburg got injured and the 26-year-old earned a chance to impress then head coach, Marco van Basten. However, he never really managed to remain the first-choice goalkeeper until Stekelenburg’s departure
to AS http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Roma-c31603 in the summer of 2011.
Since then, the former Dutch U-21 International has put in impressive displays despite struggling to perform at his best early in the ongoing season.
Frank de Boer, the Amsterdammers head coach, has expressed his delight on the deal and has revealed that Vermeer has proven his worth.
“Kenneth has proven that he can serve the club as the first-choice goalkeeper for long. I am glad that he agreed to sign a contract extension”, De Boer was quoted as saying to the club’s official website.
The Dutch glovesman was all praise for his coach and admitted that De Boer helped him a lot.
“It was tough for me at the start. Frank said that just keep on giving your best. I then just played game to game and thankfully, it worked out for me. It is my first season as the first-choice goalkeeper and I am enjoying. I want
to remain here and want to continue performing at my best”, Vermeer was quoted as saying to Voetbal International.
The 26-year-old has thus far represented the Amsterdam giants in 50 matches. He would be looking to put in impressive performances consistently in the next couple of seasons before making a move abroad.
