Ajax player Gregory van der Wiel claims that he is mature enough as footballer - Eredivisie news
Ajax right-back, Gregory van der Wiel, has claimed that he has come through difficult times and now feels that he is a more mature figure compared to a few years back. He admitted that his lifestyle was not up to the standards that a footballer must have and therefore deserved the harsh treatment when he was asked to leave the club’s academy in his youth days.
The right-back has expressed his desire to win silverware during his career and confirmed that he won’t commit the same mistakes in the future. He further mentioned, “I was acting tough, had a big mouth and I deserved it. At Haarlem, I focused on my game and I calmed down. I progressed and I came back here even though I had offers from other teams. This is my club, this is my town and I wanted to show that I’d changed. I’ve grown up, I’ve matured. I’ve got used to the lifestyle of a footballer. I take each day as it comes.”
The Dutch international added that he lost his focus because of his transfer speculations which got him excited as he always wanted to play for a top club and win trophies. The right-back was previously linked with a few Premier League sides and a Bundesliga club, Bayern Munich.
Now he has confirmed that he would like to continue playing for Ajax and all his focus is on helping his side win the title this season.
The 23-year-old concluded by saying, “I’ve never left Amsterdam and I don’t know what life is like elsewhere. It would be a huge challenge, but it ought to work out well, I’m sure of that. I want to win trophies, keep progressing and play at the very highest level."
Van der Wiel joined the Eredivisie outfit in 2007 after going through the club’s youth ranks. Since then, he has managed 102 appearances for the club and has nine goals under his belt so far.
He has also emerged 21 times for the Dutch national side and is yet to open his account in international football.
