The Belgian international has reportedly been on Tottenham and Newcastle radar, but the central defender has now made it clear that he wants to remain at Amsterdam Arena for at least another season.
In spite of being linked with a number of English Premier League clubs, Ajax Amsterdam centre-back, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Toby-Alderweireld-c35183, has made it clear that he does not intend to leave the Eredivisie champions at this stage of his career.
The Belgian stopper, who came through the ranks of the Amsterdammers’ youth academy, has been plying his trade at Amsterdam Arena since making his debut in the 2008/09 season.
Following his consistent and rock solid showings for the past couple of seasons, several top European clubs including the likes of Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur have been taking keen interest in luring the 23-year-old away from Amsterdam Arena in
the upcoming summer transfer window.
However, the highly rated central defender has now made it clear that that he has no intentions of leaving his current side, while insisting that he will follow in the footsteps of Jan Vertonghen and Thomas Vermaelen.
Vermaelen, who started his career at Amsterdam Arena in the 2003/04 season, joined Arsenal in the summer of 2009 after donning the jersey of the Amsterdammers in over 100 games during his six-season stay.
Vertonghen also made his professional career debut while wearing De Joden colours in the 2006/07 season, and played close to 200 games for the 31-time Dutch champions before moving to Tottenham Hotspur in the summer of 2012.
“http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jan-Vertonghen-c17814 is two years older than I am, and has only just left. So if I'd follow in their footsteps, I would not leave Ajax in the upcoming summer, but in the year after that. I still
have plenty of time to further develop and follow the same path as them”, Alderweireld was quoted as saying to Elf Voetbal.
The 23-year-old, who has thus far represented De Joden in 125 games in all competitions, has an ongoing contract at Amsterdam Arena that runs until the end of the 2013/14 season.
