The Amsterdammers boss has insisted that his side could be forced to sell the Belgian stopper if he denies renewing his ongoing contract.
Ajax Amsterdam head coach, Frank de Boer, has revealed that his side would sell http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jan-Vertonghen-c17814 in the upcoming summer transfer window if he denies signing an extension to his current contract.
The Belgian stopper, who has been plying his trade at Amsterdam Arena since the summer of 2006, has an expiring contract with the Amsterdammers that will run until the end of the 2012/13 campaign. The 24-year-old recently claimed that he could stay at Amsterdam
Arena until the end of his contract.
However, De Joden boss has insisted that his side has no intention of losing the highly-rated centre-back on a free transfer in the summer of 2013. The 41-year-old tactician revealed that his side will sell the central defender in the summer transfer window
if the Belgian International refuses signing a new contract.
“We know that his contract expires in 2013. So it's either renew or relocate to a good foreign club, where Ajax would also benefit from a transfer fee”, De Boer was quoted as saying to the media.
The Amsterdammers head coach then went on to reveal that his side had already told the central defender that they want to prolong his stay at Amsterdam Arena.
“We already told Jan last year in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Turkey-c3026 that we are keen to hold on to him. We will open talks early in March to discuss a new deal”, De Boer concluded.
Vertonghen, who wore the captain’s armband earlier this season following the departure of http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Roma-c31603, has thus far played 139 matches for the Amsterdam giants and has netted 18 goals.
His impressive performances at the back in the past couple of seasons have garnered interest from a host of European clubs including Tottenham Hotspur, AC Milan, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Arsenal-c38429 and Newcastle United.
Reports indicate that the Ajax management would be offering a new and improved contract to the Belgian stopper in the coming days to tie him down at Amsterdam Arena for further years.
