The Dutch International admits contact with the Serie A outfit, but insists that he will move to a club that will be playing in the Champions League next term.
Ajax Amsterdam right-back, Gregory van der Wiel, has been heavily linked with a move away from Amsterdam Arena this summer, with some reports even claiming that the 24-year-old has agreed personal terms with the Serie A club, AS Roma.
However, the Dutch International has mooted all speculations and has made it clear that he will only move to a club that will be playing in UEFA Champions League next season.
The full-back has explained that his agent, Hakim Slimani, met with the Giallorossi management on their request, but he clearly told them that his client does not intend to join a club that will not be competing in the Europe’s primary club competition in
the 2012/13 campaign.
“It has been suggested, particularly in Italian media, that I have reached an agreement with Roma. These rumours are not entirely unfounded, but they are still incorrect. My agent Hakim Slimani has spent a day in Rome at the request of Roma. The Italian
club would like to buy me from Ajax, but Hakim has told them that I prefer a club that will be playing in the Champions League next season”, Van der Wiel was quoted as saying on his recently launched website.
La Maggica finished seventh on the Serie A table in the recently concluded 2011/12 season, consequently missing out Champions League berth.
The highly-rated right-back, who has also been linked with the likes of Real Madrid, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Chelsea-c38786, has open heartedly thanked the Italian outfit for expressing interest in his services.
“Nevertheless, I feel honoured that they have shown an interest in me. I have thanked http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Roma-c31603 for their interest, but at this moment I prefer focusing on the national team and Euro 2012 and after that I will plan my future”, Van der Wiel concluded.
The Dutch International, who has been plying his trade at Amsterdam Arena since the summer of 2007, has a year left in his current contract with Ajax.
