The Belgian stopper was unable to hide his excitement following his side’s 2-0 win over http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/VVV-Venlo-c40915 that clinched them the Eredivisie title ahead of the final round of fixtures.
Ajax Amsterdam centre-back, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jan-Vertonghen-c17814, was extremely excited after watching his side land its 31st Eredivisie title following their 2-0 win over VVV-Venlo at Amsterdam Arena on Wednesday, May 2.
The Belgian stopper has revealed that his side was completely charged up heading into the game against the Venlo outfit, knowing that they needed only a single point to clinch the title.
“I was more excited than ever. Because I was looking forward to it so much, it seems more real now. We were completely charged up for VVV. I think that showed”, Vertonghen was quoted as saying to the club’s official website.
The 25-year-old, who is a product of the Amsterdammers’ fabled youth academy, started his professional career at Amsterdam Arena in the 2006/07 season. He was loaned to http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/RKC-Waalwijk-c40370 in the same season on a six-month deal to enjoy more playing time.
He returned to Amsterdam in the following season and has been performing consistently since then. However, the highly-rated central defender’s showings in the past couple of seasons have made him one of the finest centre-backs playing in Europe.
The Belgian stopper’s performances have not gone unnoticed, as several elite European clubs including the likes of Manchester United, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Olympique-Lyonnais-c40130 are taking keen interest in acquiring his
signature this summer.
Vertonghen has an ongoing contract with Ajax that runs until the summer of 2013. However, with a host of clubs interested in signing him in the upcoming summer transfer window, it seems unlikely that the Belgian stopper would be plying his trade at Amsterdam
Arena in the 2012/13 campaign.
The 25-year-old was understandably downbeat answering questions regarding his future with Ajax.
“Is it a shame to leave now? It is, a bit. Especially when I’m standing here with the trophy. But I haven’t left Ajax yet. First, we’re going to enjoy the championship together. I’m looking forward to tomorrow’s celebration. It’s great that there’s a night
in between this year, so we have some more time to let it all sink in”, Vertonghen concluded.
