The 26-year-old goalkeeper was upset with his side’s 1-0 defeat against Borussia Dortmund in their Champions League opener, and admitted that his side will have to win their next games if they are to make progression to
the next round.
Ajax Amsterdam goalkeeper, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Kenneth-Vermeer-c20618, has expressed his disappointment over his side’s 1-0 defeat against Borussia Dortmund in their first game of the UEFA Champions League at Signal Iduna Park on Tuesday, September 18.
The 26-year-old glovesman praised his side’s efforts on the pitch against the German champions, but admitted that conceding a goal in the closing stages of the match was extremely frustrating.
Die Borussians commenced proceedings brightly, but their early dominance faded away as the game progressed. The Amsterdam giants, on the other hand, managed to enjoy majority of ball possession, but failed to break the deadlock
as well in the opening 45 minutes.
The German champions resumed proceedings in the second-half aggressively, and could have grabbed the lead in the 58th minute, but http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Mats-Hummels-c24767 failed to hit the back of the net from the spot. However, they did manage
to score the winner in the 87th minute through http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Robert-Lewandowski-c31255.
“Of course we're disappointed. We played well, so to concede a goal three minutes before time was frustrating. We thought things might go our way [when Dortmund missed the penalty] and things were going well, at least until the
end”, Vermeer was quoted as saying to UEFA.com
The Dutch shot-stopper, who has thus far played close to 100 games while wearing the Amsterdammers colours, went on to insist that his side will only make progression to the next phase of the competition if they manage to win their
next games.
“The only way we can qualify is to win our next games, but we know we're up against some tough teams. We have to play our own game and try to get results”, Vermeer added.
The 26-year-old, who has been the first-choice goalkeeper at De Joden since http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Roma-c31603, expressed his joy of playing in the Europe’s most prestigious club
competition.
“I'm really enjoying games like this in the Champions League. They're the best games a football player can be involved in”, Vermeer concluded.
Ajax will lock horns against Real Madrid in their next Champions League encounter on October 3.
